It's cool outside and in.

With more than 200 stores selling everything from high end brand clothes and shoes, through a myriad of restaurants to silver and gold and Thai arts and crafts–and practically everything in between–Jungceylon on Patong’s Rat-u-thit Road has transformed the shopping experience since its quiet opening four years ago.

Then, the huge complex, which includes Robinsons, an apartment store; and Carrefour, the French based supermarket chain, was a cavernous blob on an already, apparently, overshopped Patong landscape.

But since then as it celebrated its fourth anniversary in March, Jungceylon has become the go-to place for shopping at your convenience on Phuket. Air conditioned comfort eliminates the often stifling heat in the markets and around the street shops–which, incidentally, all seem to do OK despite Jungceylon’s overwhelming presence.

Want cheap DVDs/CDs/VCDs and cassettes? All there opposite the entrance to Carrefour, which also has three Japanese styled facial massage salons right outside. Upstairs in Robinsons are women’s shoes and accessories and probably the biggest selection of women’s underwear in Thailand. There is also a very attractive child’s clothing section and toy department nearby.

Exhibits side by side with shopping

In the basement beneath a recreational area featuring a dancing water display, sound stage for events and surrounded by the usual fast food mainstays, is a Thai arts and crafts and massage area, brimming with every type of Thai products you can imagine.

So to sum up Jungceylon it has seven banks, five eye-wear outlets, 40 clothing and accessory outlets, 10 fast food and beverage outlets, one food court, two furniture outlets, 10 health and beauty outlets, one pet store, two electronics and IT stores, 17 restaurants, one Thai arts and crafts centre consisting of 70 shops and 35 kiosks, one tailor’s shop and two travel and luggage outlets.

Four years on the shopping just gets better and better.

All your shopping heart desires.

Phuket, like most parts of Thailand, has its share of great markets where value for money shopping is top priority.

For example the Phuket Weekend Markets of Chao Fah Variety, Jatujak or Talad tai rot just off Chaofa West Road are the places to head for.

Many items at these markets are considerably cheaper than in Patong–try the deep fried crickets, if you are game–at B10 per cup. There are huge selections of shoes, clothes, accessories at these markets.

To find the Weekend Markets if you are coming from Patong, turn right at the big intersection where Central Festival is on the left and Thai Nam restaurant on the right. Turn left at the first set of traffic lights going down busy Chaofa West Road and you will see the markets on the right hand side.

This is not to forget the great shopping on Patong’s Beach Road, facing the ocean. Look out for shops which have secret rooms where you can buy better quality bags and CDs/DVDs. It’s all a bit secretive as some of these hidden rooms are not at the actual shop where you may meet the owner, so be prepared for a little walk down a side alley or two.

Eat your heart out.

Further back, on the “second road,” Rat-U-Thit Road there are OTOP markets full of Thai made goods. Stalls along this road open around 5pm and stay open until late, selling clothing, shoes, sweets, orchids, ornaments, hair accessories and jewelery.

Be warned that visiting markets can be hot and hectic, but worth the effort for the great bargains. Available are numerous stalls and shops selling bags [copies mainly] cheap DVDs/CDs, football clothing [Arsenal Shop in Jungceylon] and anything else you want to take home at a fraction of the price.

Five of the sleekest, most expensive cars available in Thailand will soon be on show in Phuket, at Central Festival’s recently opened CFP Convention Hall.

The five cars will be a Lamborghini Murcielago, a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, a Lotus Elise, and – for those who want to emulate California Governor Arnie Schwarzenegger – a Hummer H2 and its baby brother the H3.

The price tags are almost in “if you have to ask you can’t afford it” country, but for those who still count their money, we can tell you that the Murcielago is the most expensive of the lot, putting a B30-million dent in any buyer’s wallet. All five cars combined total around B100 million.

The Murceliago (it’s not clear which version will be coming to Phuket, but the name means “bat”, as in “out of hell”) will hit around 340 kmh, and reach 100 kmh from a standing start in 3.4 seconds, quite quick enough to leave your toupée in the back seat.We jest; there is no back seat. The Spyder’s not far behind, hitting a top speed of 324 kmh and doing 0-100 in 4 seconds.

Lotus Elise - Photo by StaraBlazkova

The Elise is a little slower (though a lot lighter on the pocket – expect to pay something like B3.6 million) with a top speed around 240 kmh and a 0-100 time of about 4.3 seconds.

The Hummers, of course, are not built for speed, despite their massive engines. But what they really excel at is scaring the bejayzus out of anyone they approach from behind, and guzzling fuel. Manufacturer GM provides no official figures, but magazine reviews put H2 consumption at somewhere around 21 litres for every 100 km.

The cars, brought to the island by Niche Cars of Bangkok, will be on show at Central Festival from September 5 to 14.

Phuket’s film festival may be dead, but fashion is very much alive, with more than 150 models and celebrities heading for the island for Phuket International Fashion Week, from June 24 to 30. There will be 21 fashion shows during the week, with the promise of concerts by 20 or more top artists every night – no names announced so far, although there is a strong rumour going round the Korean all-girl band Wonder Girls will be performing at some stage.

Proceeds from the event, which is being organised by the Phoenix modeling and media production agency and graphics house Matchfame, will go to the Thai Red Cross and the Phuket Has Been Good To Us Foundation.

I wonder... will the Wonder Girls really come? Photo by True World.

The brands of clothing on display have yet to be announced, but for those who know their models and celebrities, the people on the catwalk will include Patcharpa Chaicheau, Wanarot Sonthichai, Nattawut Sakitjai, Nina L, Napatcha P, Irina L and many others with single-letter family names.

For us provincial hicks of Phuket, this promises to be a jaw-dropping festival as faces and bodies we’ve seen only on TV and in glossy magazines strut the latest fashions – live! – in front of the Jungceylon fountains.

The organisers expect to make this an annual event, “a regular event on the world fashion calendar”. We certainly hope so. We also hope it doesn’t rain…

Update: Complete Phuket Fashion Week photo report can be found here.

They're all at the new Premium Outlet shopping village. Click the pic for a guided tour of Phuket's latest venue for punishing your credit card.
Premium Outlet – Fashionista Heaven comes to Phuket is an article from: Phuket Observer - Phuket lifestyle magazine.

Sporting architecture: The Adidas Building.

One upon a time, a shirt was a shirt. Then along came the clever marketing boys who convinced everyone from LA to Lagos to Luang Prabang that if you wanted to stand out from the crowd you had to buy a shirt with an ad for the manufacturer splashed across the front of it. For this privilege you were happy to pay a premium of a couple of hundred percent.

These days, the only way to get a shirt without advertising is to go to a tailor. We’re all used to it now. We’re all trained to want to show everyone else that we know what quality is – and that we can afford it.

So it’s a bit of a relief that Phuket now has Premium Outlet, which opened on April 11 on the east side of the bypass road, about 800m from the Koh Kaew traffic lights.

Premium Outlet is a village of pleasing quasi-European architecture with two parallel streets about 400m long, connected by cross-streets. Every shop carries a brand name. There is, of course, a passel of famous brands: Nike and arch-rivals Adidas, Hush Puppy, Guy Laroche, Pierre Cardin and Van Heusen, along with Levi’s and Lee shoulder-to-shoulder, and a large Warner Bros emporium at one end.

There are also lots of brands the Observer has never heard of (but then the Observer admits to being no expert): French Kitty (shouldn’t that be “Allo Kitty”?), XL for Men, Rampage (ooh), Axara (which sounds like a property development, but isn’t), Xoxo (how do you pronounce that? Soxo? Ksokso? Shosho?), L. Secret (the name written in large, decidedly unsecret letters), and a brand whose name cannot be replicated here because it contains a letter that does not exist in any known alphabet. Our guess is it’s known as “Exact”, but please don’t quote us.

Even Daffy Duck is offering 70% off

We didn’t see Ralph Lauren or his Polo shirts, but not to fear. Instead we have Gallop of California, Beverly Hills Polo Club, and Santa Barbara Polo and Racquets Club. Plainly, the idea of people playing croquet from the backs of horses is a powerful one in marketing terms.

Nor did we see Valentino, though there is a Valentine shop. There’s also Warehouse, which looks nothing like a warehouse, but is very pretty nonetheless.

There’s Sports Stadium at the other end from Warner Bros, a huge place where you can get all that good stuff that makes you play sports so much better, and next door there’s a golf shop selling gear by Callaway, Titleist and Tailormade. Swinging.

And then there’s Character World. “Yes, I’d like a rather dry, witty character, and I’ll take a cheerful, naive character for rainy days. Could you gift-wrap them, please?” We jest. It’s a toy shop.

The toilets are smart and clean, there’s a food hall in a crimson building shaped a bit like one of those Mexican churches in a spaghetti western, and there’s a coffee shop that may or may not be called Box Office (no sign outside).

The really good news is that just about everyone is offering huge discounts – up to 70%. Off what? you may ask. Off the full price, of course. But is the price high or low? That depends. We saw a pair of flip-flops for B250. A bit steep when you can buy a pair in Lotus for B20. But then, of course, they did have an essential brand – we forget which one – stamped on them.

And we did see some nice croquet-on-horseback shirts for B450, which seemed reasonable.

Premium Outlet’s best marketing ploy is that it can get uncomfortably sticky schlepping along the hot and humid streets of the village. The only way to get out of the heat is to get into the air-conditioned shops.

So don’t delay. Get down there today. Just do it.
