Wickets, howzats and smatterings of other strange-sounding English words will be used later this month when the Phuket Cricket Week (PCW) returns to the island from 14th – 22nd April.
Now bigger than ever, the PCW is now comprised of three tournaments; a Cricket 7s Tournament, a Beach Cricket Tournament and the Phuket International Cricket Sixes. 40 local and overseas teams will be competing for the much-coveted trophies, peer respect and to have fun and raise money for the Phuket Junior Cricket Development Fund.
The venue has been changed for this year, due to a double booking of the Thai Youth games at the tournament’s previously held venue, the Karon Stadium so it will now be held at Kata Group Sports Ground (KGSG) in Chalong. This will also be home to the newest addition to Phuket Cricket week, the Kata Group International Cricket 7s. The new tournament features a novel seven-a-side format and games will be played from 14-16th April.
On the 17th April, the Karon Sea Sands Resort & Spa will once again host the Beach Cricket Tournament on the stretch of beach in front of the resort. This is the tournament for the player and spectator who perhaps is as attuned to the merits of a cold beer and nice beach as he/she is to a doosra or a full toss.
It is the Phuket International Cricket Sixes however that draws the most participation and crowds and from the 18th – 22nd April, the KGSG will take on the daunting task of hosting an event that has rapidly grown in stature and respect since it started in 2004. This year’s tournament will feature 28 teams which will now be able to take advantage of the KGSG’s huge outfield grounds, clubhouse, swimming pool and bar.
The Phuket Cricket Week is also an opportunity to raise money for the Phuket Junior Cricket Development Fund, charged with distributing collected funds to worthy projects and programmes that contribute to the development of youth cricket in Phuket. It is hoped that last year’s total of 158,000 baht will be beaten by the kind donations and support of the competitors and spectators.
